Thought of the week… What the world needs now is love!

A true love and esteem of God will dispose the heart to acknowledge God’s right to govern and that he is worthy of it; and so will dispose it to submit.

Love to God will dispose to walk humbly with God.

For he that love God will be disposed to acknowledge the distance there is between God and him.

It will be agreeable to him who loves God to exalt him and set him on high above all, and to lie low before him.

A true Christian delights to have God exalted in his abasement, because he loves God.

He is willing to own that God is worthy of this; and it is with delight that he casts himself in the dust before God, because he loves God.

So a due consideration of the nature of love will show that it will dispose men to all duties towards their neighbours If men have a hearty love to their neighbours it will dispose them to all acts of justice towards them.

Men are not disposed to wrong those whom they truly love. Real love and friendship will dispose persons to give others their due. romans 13:10 “Love worketh no ill to his neighbour.”

- Jonathan Edwards ‘Sermon One: Love the Sum of All Virtue”

Edwards goes on to say that love will dispose us to many more things that will be for good of our neighbours.
Love will dispose us to:

  • truth towards neighbours (not lies or deceit)
  • walk humbly among men to honor one another (not pride or arrogance)
  • contentment in the station in which God hat set him. (not coveting)
  • meekness and gentleness in their carriage towards neighbours (not violence or hatred)
  • a sweet disposition and affection of the soul (not bitterness)
  • peaceableness (not broils and quarrels)
  • forgive injuries received from their neighbours (not harbouring grudges)
  • acts of mercy toward neighbours who are under any affliction or calamity (not laughing at their misfortunes)
  • give to the poor and bear with one another’s burdens, to weep with those that weep and rejoice with those that rejoice.

I want to love more.

Not only because Jesus is worthy of being exalted in my love towards him, but also in my love towards others.

Sounds like heaven.

What’s stopping you…? and 3 tips to get you going again

This morning at VibeWire’s FastBreak the following questions were asked, What’s stopping us? What stops us from doing the things we want/have to do?

The Fast Speakers gave some great and intimate insights into their worlds and the hurdles that are stopping them:

  • Being Overlooked.
  • Depression.
  • The Inner Voice (IV) & the voices of others.
  • The day-to-day. Starting a business is like “climbing up a hill wearing roller-skates“.
  • Lack of clarity, awareness & appreciation/ thankfulness: “yet there are happier people in refugee camps?”

Maybe you resonate with these obstacles. Are these the things dragging you down or hindering you?

Personally, what is stopping me is actually myself. Sounds crazy to blame myself, doesn’t it?
But, why do we always assume the role of ‘victim’ in our circumstance. And when I ask myself what is stopping me, its me?

I, like Annie, want to live a life that “values moral integrity, sustainable practices, collaboration, empathy, and understanding”, yet, if I am truly honest with myself, what holds me back from seeking out such a life is my own  selfishness,  individualism and narcissism.

selfishness | Who isn’t consumed with self? We find it hard to share especially our success! How often to you catch yourself not wanting to share any of the glory of projects, achievements, ideas with anyone but yourself? How often do you think if only there were more people like me, and did things the way I do and to the standards I produce? I do, and unfortunately too often!

individualism | We live in an incredibly individualized culture. We are very used to living in networks of terminally casual relationships, whereby deep, intimate and long-lasting connections becomes just some nostalgic gesture of the yester-years.  The right to live our lives our own way and the belief that within and of ourselves we have everything in we need as individuals to do what we want to do and become, is delusion. Autonomy and self-sufficiency, although ever present in each of us, is a lie. We need each other. We need community and partnerships to succeed and prosper (physically, socially, vocationally and spiritually).

narcissism | Social media itself is testament that we all have ‘egos’ to preserve. Motivation for our tweets, status updates, comments, or posts is to promote the self and paint ourselves in a better light than perhaps what is the truth and reality. How often do you read about people promoting ‘others’ interests and standing up for the voices that are struggling to be heard?

In short, it is my own S.I.N that holds me back.

So, what is the remedy to being held back by these things?

top 3 tips to get you going

  1. Don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought.
  2. Appreciate others. Don’t overlook them. Serve them. Seek their good.
  3. Look up to others, who look out for others. (Check this out)

Surprisingly (or perhaps not, perhaps this is the way we are actually wired to operate?), other-person-centredness benefits the self in the long run. It brings awareness, clarity and thankfulness. It equips us with a gracious objectivity, flexibility, empathy and understanding.

Looking outside of ourselves to the needs of others brings greater motivation to get on with life & its projects.

Evangelistic Talk for 3 year olds…

I am on the story today at Playtime and it happens to be one of my favourite parables: The Prodigal Son. It is a great story displaying the lavish heart of our great God to welcome us in.

The material I was given to tell our 0-5 year olds about Our God’s Big Welcome was a little long and hard to follow… So I thought I’d put the story into some rhyme*. I also printed off these brilliant story board pictures from EBibleTeacher to show the children as I read the rhyme.

Feel free to use this for your Playgroup. All I ask is that while I have you here, please pray for Playtime at Church by the Bridge, that many children and their families would come to know God’s extravagant and lavish welcome for them.

Once there was a father who had two sons
Then one left home to go have some fun!!!

The dad gave his son some money in a bag
and the look on the sons face showed he was glad

The son then wasted all he had.
And was living far away from his Dad.

So things began to turn real bad
The young son was now really sad.

He had nothing to eat.
No shoes on his feet.

So He began to feed pigs for some work
and even slept with them in their dirt.

The poor young son was filled with dread
“For me theres got to be a better bed”

I know! I’ll go back to my Dads home
And say sorry for running away on my own”

So the son left the dirty smelly pigs trough
And while he was still a long long way off

The Dad saw him, stretched his arms wide out
Began running and with a great BIG shout

“Welcome! Welcome! my dear young son
I don’t care what you have done.

Come on home, come on in
Please don’t ever leave again”

The Dad was so very excited
that he ran around telling everyone about it:

“My son was lost but now he’s found
He’s come back home safe and sound!”

The Dad then only wanted to celebrate
So the town gathered and party food they ate.

And with another BIG hug the Dad continued to say
“Welcome Welcome”  - Oh its been such a happy day!

The harvest in your suburb

Do you see the potential in your suburb?

Where there is a lost son or daughter, there is an abundance of the Father’s mercy. No matter how good or how bad your neighbours and locals are – there is an opportunity for change, an opportunity for an encounter with the goodness and grace of God. There is potential and there is hope for salvation and eternal life.

Jesus when he looks out on the crowds he doesn’t see them as a burden. Rather He is burdened for them. He looks on them with hope. Hope of changed lives as they encounter Him and his word.

Do you look on your suburb with expectancy, hope, compassion and anticipation – knowing they are the LORD’s harvest?

5 outreach tips without spending any extra money…

Just 5 suggestions to help you as an individual and the individuals in your churches make an impact in the local community you are in.
  1. KNOW: Get to know yourself ! What are your strengths, weaknesses, gifts, capacity, abilities, passions. Now exploit each one of them for the gospel and sake of others salvation.

  2. MEET: Get to know key people in you local area and build good friendships (Council, Community Centre, Familiar Faces sitting on park benches, Shop owners, Baristas etc) Smile. Say hello. Share a story with them.

  3. PARTICIPATE: Be interested in things your local community puts on and go to them – if you expect to host events and for locals to turn up – why not return the favour. They put energy into it, and guaranteed there are more unbelievers at their events than any evangelistic event you put on.

  4. PLAY:  Don’t try to fit mission into your diary, make your diary missional. Kill 2 birds with one stone! Combine our play time / passions / leisure with mission. Join a sports group/knitting group/mums group/art class on your own or 1 other Christian and invest in the lives of those around you.

  5. LIVE: in the area; do things in your area. There is such a difference to a 5-10 min commute into the your suburb. When you live in the community you discover better the rhythm of the community by using the post office, banking, or the convenience store to get the milk. You also become better known to those you are trying to reach.

This all means living generously and creating space for new people to be welcomed into your life. None of the above costs large amounts of additional funds or swallows up the church budget.

Love thy neighbourhood by getting smelly & dirty!

Every year hundreds of thousands of Australians get stuck in and clean up their local environment by collecting and removing rubbish on Clean Up Australia Day. The 2011 Clean Up Australia Day event will be held on Sunday, 6 March.

It is a great morning to care about your local area with other locals and together help take care of the world God has given us!

Create & Register your church as a site.

OR

Volunteer your church group to join a site.

Either way – why not host a free BBQ for all at your church. Chat with the organisers of the site if you are not oi to be the host, and ask if you can do this for them. Don’t forget to invite the local council workers.

John Piper on Evangelism & Social Action

From Lausanne, John Piper is interviewed by Pastor Steve Chong (of Kirkplace Presbyterian Church in Sydney, Australia, and director of the Rice Movement)

When mission looks like a cupcake…

Physically, on the ground our week long mission looks like art exhibition and prize, accompanied with a prize night for the entrants, Fair Trade markets with cupcakes and coffee, live music at night, kids art workshop, playtime under the bridge and more! There is pretty much something for everyone!

BUT Spiritually, it is all about MISSION!

As much as I love art, cupcakes, coffee, balloons, bbq’s, and having our face painted I love Jesus more and am convinced He is worthy of all creations worship. I want to see more worshipers around the throne, worshiping the lamb, not just because I know the benefits they will receive in doing so, but more importantly because Jesus deserves their worship. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. All the outreach ministries of our church aim to glorify Jesus by gathering more and more worshipers of him.

I want to create places for smiling faces, where people can meet Christians, gain exposure to gospel community and hopefully encounter Jesus. As one of my favourite pastors John Piper, says “mission exists because worship doesn’t. And so with I ♥ Kirribilli, it only exists because worship doesn’t.

It might not look like a normal evangelistic mission… Its a week long program with only two spots where the gospel is shared formally – the prize night and the kids art workshop. We don’t have an the charismatic evangelist, Billy-Graham-type speaking to the masses. We aren’t going doorknocking, and there isn’t a youth rally.

Instead of just bringing in the ‘professional evangelists’ or thinking there just needs to be a formal preaching opportunity – the evangelism during this week is going to be done by each of you. We each have the treasure of the gospel and the power to share it. Sitting on the door of church welcoming people to the exhibition, giving them a peoples choice response slip, offering a free cupcake, sample of fair trade coffee gives you reason to be chatting and sharing your lives with people.

In many ways it is door knocking / walk up evangelism handed to us on a silver platter. It’s a lot less threatening for all involved, its natural, and its what church should be doing… gospelling people we meet.

We estimated 1000 people wandered through the church during the week, last year.  This is just the opportunity we have with the many unchurched neighbours and friends who enter or view the exhibition. We get the opportunity to plant little gospel seeds into people’s lives, and perhaps see others or ourselves water, and God give these seeds the growth.
