The arts for God’s glory and the spread of his fame

All artworks have a worldview or belief that the artist believes, is exploring or challanging and often the value of an artwork is derived from how well this message or voice is communicated. We prize certain artworks because they say something to us, and if that moves us personally we prize the artwork even more because of what it has communicated to us. This is where subjectivity comes into play. Some artworks speak with great motion and clarity to some people, while remaining silent to others. Regardless, the artworks still offer communication to us, and it is this communication that opens doors of dialogue in the art world.

As Christians we can take advantage of this by encouraging our brethren artists and creatives to continue developing their God-given gifts bringing themes of depravity, grace, redemption, glory into the discourse of the art world as well as sharing the toil and joy of the Christian experience. We can’t keep letting the world have the best art and dominating the ears of our culture with the voice of this age. The art world is a realm where philosophy and humanity are freely discussed. We need a Christian voice to inform this realm and engage the culture that is of beauty and truth.

More of a whole human

Erin Hodder was quoted in Sunday Telegraph (p17) that caring full-time for her mother, who suffers from MS, has ‘sort of made me more of a human being. It has made me realise what is important in life and it has helped me to grow and make good choices’.

Amazing isn’t it that we can find ourselves feeling most human when we are serving someone.

Jesus was the perfect human. No deceit or sin was found in him. He loved the Father with his whole heart, mind and strength. He served God and fellow human-kind.

Jesus lived the life we were supposed to live. To be most human is to be without sin, to worship God, to serve Him and others.

WiFi Evangelism…

One of my friends @mikewinram ask this question in a tweet today:
Question: What did you call your wireless network?

But have you ever thought about the evangelistic potential of your wireless network name? Well @mikewinram has. A later tweet reveals that his wireless network is “jesusreigns”.

He claims he is

Trying to convert my building through wireless. So far, 3 people have asked if it is mine, but they already believe.

Why not change bigpond230918 to Jesusreigns, Jesussaves, Jesusloves,  Jesusislord, repent&believe, followJesus, JesusIsAlive, HeIsRisen … the opportunities are endless.

Don’t fall victim to our insular culture…

Don’t fall victim to our insular culture: shift priorities and love a non-Christian with your time

It was a painful ten minutes in front of my screen.

“No worries that tennis game can wait, but it would have been nice to catch up for chats / snacks sometime.”

My friend wasn’t telling me that he really needed this catch up.  Nor was he signalling that this was a last chance for our friendship; or even suggesting that he didn’t understanding about my other priorities.  The writer, my dear dear, non-Christian mate Dan indeed has his own priorities.

But what could I say?

As I looked at my diary, there just wasn’t another opening… for six weeks.  I know God’s sovereign.  I know he will save who he’s planned to.  I know my mate can come to faith without me in his life at all.  But I know that the gospel moves me to prioritise relationships too; and that God’s leaving this current creation still ticking over so that he can bring more people into his family.  Like you, I do have a real care for the lost (even if it often slips away to the back of my mind).

So with a genuine grimace on my face, I started to type:

“Mate, with symbolic tears, I’m really sorry to say that I’m just too busy for the next little while.  It’s a mixture of life, family expectations, work.  Yeah I really haven’t been giving work the attention I should have.”

I suppose that’s fair enough, I thought; God really is sovereign…  And I really shouldn’t fail those close to me… or my work.. in order to put Dan first.  But seriously, what the heck am I doing?: I’ve seen him only twice all year…  And it’s not like I’ve been having much time with a whole lot of other non-Christian mates.   Ahhh, they said it would happen and it’s happened: most of my social time is with Christians.   Arghh…

I really believe the gospel and I really believe that God uses people to share it with other people.  Sending this e-mail is just lame, I thought.

So, as is often the case for me, a better solution came, with a calm re-think of my priorities.  The family, the church-stuff, the work-stuff all needed to stay high up the list…  So what could go?  Well, not my sport/ exercise.  Stopping the little of it I get to do probably would not be good for my mental health and wouldn’t free up much time anyway.  Likewise, for bits of down-time.  They feel good for me when I have them and feel right when I look at the Bible’s take on rest.

What else could go?  Well… here it is:  time with other believers.

As I looked at it all, it seemed like I was getting enough feeding from the Bible: during the week in groups, at church on Sun, and it’s almost daily with my wife at home too.  But other time I’ve booked in with Christian friends… do I need that?

Well sometimes: yes.  When I need it, fellowship with Christians, especially ones I’ve known for years, is a great source of care.  But also, it’s fair to say that lots of the time I have with other CHristians is simply enjoying each others’ shared interests.  It’s not necessarily always rich, Christainly-shaped fellowship.  We label it fellowship because we’re all Christians there, and we say grace when we have a meal together, but really it’s just comfortable, social time.   And I’m not saying that’s all wrong…  I’m just saying that that in light of how little time I have socially with non-believers, that Christian-only social time, is what I need to cut.

Maybe obvious, but it felt like an epiphany at the time.   I had an injection of joy as I decided to pull out of my regular social catch-up with other Christian friends.  In turn, I deleted what I had first typed in that e-mail and keyed a new one to arrange a time with Dan.

That’s it.  A swap of priorities.

So fellow believers, here are the questions for you:

  • Is having non-Christians in your life a high enough priority for you?
  • Is your social life full with Christian-only stuff?
  • Is there stuff you do now with only Christians, that you could include non-believers in- sport, book club, going for coffee, gym…??

I had a mate once, who said he was pulling out of his weekly Bible Study so he could play in a basketball team with non-Christian mates.  I’m not sure about that,  but hey, desperate times call for desperate measures. Around 3% of people in Sydney in gospel-serious churches and for many of us as low as 0% of our social time is spent with non-believers. Yeah… maybe these are desperate times??

Well, if you buy this, do something about it:

  • Pray.
  • Change your priority list and your diary.
  • Encourage a Christian friend to do likewise.

Sabbath from Technology…

I am more and more convinced that our generation is filling ‘the God shaped whole’ with data. Although these guys aren’t believers I think this video diagnoses the subtle idolatry that exists in our generations…. we look to data and technology to give us worth and identity, we wake with technology in our hands and we see the sun go down with technology in our hands. I wonder how many of us actually have technology creeping in for the position of God in our lives:

“Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your God” – Martin Luther

I missed the National Day of Slowing Down on March 20, but the organisers created a Sabbath Manifesto with 10 principles to help you unplug. I particularly like 1-5, 9 and 10.

The Sabbath Manifesto is a creative project designed to slow down lives in an increasingly hectic world. We’ve created 10 core principles completely open for your unique interpretation. We welcome you to join us as we carve a weekly timeout into our lives.

Do you Sabbath from data?

“evangelism is tasteless, like exposing yourself in public”…

Pat Condell doesn’t respect your beliefs and doesn’t care if you get offended. He has writting a book “Godless Comedy”, which is his serious thoughts on religion and giving it the kicking it apparently deserves. You can watch many of his video-posts on youtube that detail why Christians and other ‘religions’ have it so wrong.

3 tips to help you and others share Christ…

  1. Daily Bible Reading

All Christians should desire to have an increased Bible knowledge, that is a deep desire and commitment to dig deeper into God’s word personally through daily bible reading.  As we saturate ourselves in scripture we are more acquainted with our God and our hearts change. This will have an overflow effect into our words and actions. Why not make it a goal for yourself and others to read the Bible in a year!
    (check out resources here)

  2. Bookstall at Church

Pump up the bookstall at church. Check there are good books on it and ensure new stock is brought in. Place a couple of quality books on their that aren’t just pushing your agenda of evangelism but that is pushing your sheep to love, know and obey Christ more deeply. We should read and meditate on the Bible, of course, but we should also read theology and grow in our understanding of the glorious truths of God. Let’s not be lazy with the things of God.
(click here for more on why Christians should be readers)

  3. Use Facebook

Help grow your flock’s affections for Jesus through your sharing of links to:
    * new mp3 sermons are up
    * resources that are on your church website
    * direct attention to good Christian blogs and websites Perhaps a tricky topic came up in the sermon and you read a good article or post on the topic, why not share it with others and encourage them to do further reading on the topic also.
    * new songs you are singing at church. The more we know the songs lyrics the more we own them and sing on Sundays with meaning & gusto. Plus music is a word ministry where the Spirit has great opportunity to minister to us as we sing the words and recall the words throughout the day – its a great defense against Satan also.

(Oh and a fourth tip… PRAY!)
